The Net Result: A Case Study of Resource Exploitation

For more than 100 years, the commercial fishing industry thrived in Minnesota, but it declined as the resource was depleted and the politics of modern sport fishing took precedent over fishing for a livelihood. Today there is almost no commercial fishing in Minnesota.

The decline of Minnesota's once-important commercial fishing industry is a classic example of resource exploitation which is being reenacted all over the globe. With today's population explosion and challenge to feed the world, many look to our waters for a food source. But since the early 1970s, the world fish catch per person has been declining. What appeared to be an unlimited bonanza is in truth a fragile resource. The Net Result uses Minnesota's fishing industry as an example of the exploitation and destruction of a fragile resource to satisfy short-term interests.
