Chased by the Light : A 90 Day Journey
"In autumn I set out to make one photograph - one single exposure---each day
for 90 days. I hoped with patience and endurance to renew my vision of the
natural world." This is how Jim Brandenburg described his personal search for
a new challenge and a hoped-for spiritual renewal after years of traveling
the world as an award-winning photographer for National Geographic Magazine.
Brandenburg was twice named Magazine Photographer of the Year and Kodak Wildlife
Photographer of the Year. He is author of three best-selling books, "Chased
by the Light," "White Wolf," and "Brother Wolf," as well as several children's
books. In 1991, he was the recipient of the prestigious World Achievement Award
from the United Nations Environmental Programme in Stockholm, Sweden for his
use of nature photography to raise public awareness for the environment.
The "Chased by the Light" photographs were all taken in the deep woods surrounding
Brandenburg's home, Ravenwood, near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness,
in northern Minnesota. They represent his feelings about the essence of wild
places - a raven feather in the rain; a tree marked by a bear; a frosty meadow;
lichens; an abandoned beaver dam; a wolf chasing ravens; or the aurora borealis
in the nighttime sky. Brandenburg's photographic journey began at sunrise in
a black spruce forest on September 23, 1994 - the beginning of the autumn equinox,
and ended on a moonlit lake on December 21st, the longest night of the year.
