Cordgrass Spartina pectinata Grass Family (Poaceae) Habitat/Range: Abundant in wet prairies and prairie marshes, also occurring in wet depressions and along streams in upland prairies. Found throughout the tallgrass region. |

Stout-stemmed grasses up to 10 feet tall, with leaves up to 4 feet long and about _ inch wide. The edges of the leaves are sharply roughened. Each stem is topped by a cluster of up to 32 side branches, with each side branch 1 to 6 inches long. Each side branch consists of many straw colored flowers. Also called Slough Grass or Ripgut (sharp-edged leaves). It has been use for thatching and fuel. |
