Fox Snake Elaphe vulpina Length: 91-137 cm (36-54 in.) Habitat/Range: They are found throughout the north central United States. Fox snakes are associated with river bottom forests, pine barrens, and prairies. Eating Habits: They eat mice, chipmunks, ground squirrels and other small mammals. |

The fox snake is brownish with many large, reddish blotches along its back and along each side. Its belly is pale yellow with many brown rectangular blotches. It has a rounded head with no coloration. It overwinters under rocks and in mammal burrows. If an intruder surprises it, it vibrates its tail and strikes from a coiled position. |
