Wild Rye Elymus canadensis Grass Family (Poaceae) Habitat/Range: Common throughout most of the tallgrass region in moist to moderately dry prairies, thickets, fields, and along stream banks. Comments: Native Americans are reported to have used these seeds as food. |

Stout grasses growing in bunches up to 3-5 feet tall. The leaves are flat or curled inward at their tip. The flowers occur above the leaves in a long, nodding cluster, 4-10 inches long at the top of the stem.
