Field Guide to the Prairie

	A native, warm-season, perennial sod-forming grass. Stems are 4 inches to 1 foot tall; leaves fine and abundant. Because Buffalo grass is native to the Great Plains from Montana to Texas, it tolerates prolonged droughts and very high or low temperatures. It's called buffalo grass because it was a primary food source of the American buffalo stretching across the Great Plains into the Mexican region and in most of Texas.
