The shortgrass prairie grows in the Great Plains, in the western border of the prairie biome in the United States, just east of the Rocky Mountains. It evolved in a dry climate, where only 12 to 15 inches of rain usually falls all year, most of it from April to June. This semi-arid climate has low humidity, high evaporation rates, and periods of severe drought.

Many endangered animals rely on the shortgrass prairie to survive, but the prairie is vanishing day-by-day.
