Don SchreinerDon Schreiner
Lake Superior Area Fisheries Advisor
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources

I have a masters degree in Fisheries Science from the University of Minnesota. I have worked for the MN-DNR in Fisheries Management over the past 20 years. During that time I spent five years as an Assistant Area Fisheries Manager in the Fergus Falls Area and three years as Area Supervisor in the Glenwood Fisheries Area. Since 1989, I have been the Lake Superior Area Fisheries Supervisor. I work closely with sport, commercial and environmental groups as well as other agencies on the lake to coordinate fisheries management in the Minnesota waters of Lake Superior.

Mt job includes monitoring the relative abundance and health of the Lake Superior fish community; protection and rehabilitation of fish habitat in the lake and its watershed; determining proper harvest regulations for both sport anglers and the commercial fishing industry; coordination of fish rearing and stocking when required; coordinating management strategies among the various fish management agencies on Lake Superior by working with the Great Lakes Fishery Commission; and working with citizens and organizations interested in the Lake Superior fish community.

I became interested in science while exploring the small stream behind my home with my brother and friends. Enthusiastic science teachers encouraged my interest and helped me explore the natural world around me. Aquatic science became more of a focus when I started fishing and scuba diving during my junior and senior high school years. Through my work, I continue to share my enthusiasm for protecting and enhancing the aquatic resources of Minnesota, specifically Lake Superior and its fish community.
