Loon Gavia immer Size: 70-90 cm (28-36 in.) Habitat/Range: Aquatic habitat. Common Loons breed across much of northern North America, from the edges of the tundra to the Upper Great Lakes, New England, and in small numbers in the Rocky Mountains as far south as Yellowstone National Park. The common loon is the most recognizable of the loons. Both the make and female have black and white plumage and red eyes. The phrase, ³crazy as a loon² came from this birdıs ³laughing² call. The loon is Minnesotaıs State Bird. |
