Students will learn about these and other interesting facts as they explore the Blue Stem Prairie of North Western Minnesota. On the Prairie is a program that promotes exciting hands-on science through a user-friendly curriculum and videotape. Topics include prairie plant ecology, the study of elusive prairie mammals, lessons in insects netting, bird identification and courting behavior in prairie chickens and finally cultural studies of native peoples.

Students will learn about these and other interesting facts concerning freshwater systems with the Aquatic Adventure curriculum and videotape. The easy to use, hands-on curriculum materials provide lessons that fulfill the National Science Standards, and incorporates subject areas such as history, social studies, art, math, and science. The videotape brings to life the curriculum materials with an on-site research experience—it's like going on a real field trip! Students will watch current researchers explore an actual freshwater ecosystem, and will learn about freshwater animals, watersheds, stream ecology and stream restoration. Cost: $75

Winner of the following awards:
1996 U.S. Distance Learning Association Award for Best Distance Learning Program
1996 Gold Plaque for outstanding electronic field trip

What role does fire play in the forest? Which animals rely on forest ecosystems? Can human activities take the place of natural fire? Learn the answers to these questions and more with the Fire And The Forest curriculum and videotape!

Through the integrated curriculum, students will learn about the forest and the effects of fire. Conifers are the focus of this program— the resources needed for their survival, the competition for these resources, and their fight against disease. The video takes students into the forest to investigate the role of fire on plants and animals, while exploring the relationship between managing a forest for wildlife habitat, recreation, and business. View a QuickTime video (1.8MB) of the videotape.

OwlBell LIVE! 1994: RAPTORS LIVE!
Cost: $75

Raptors are an excellent medium through which to study environmental and ecological issues. Poised at the top of the avian food chain, birds of prey act as indicator species, providing us with an early warning of environmental hazards. By demonstrating that science is both interesting and important, Raptors LIVE! hopes to encourage more students to pursue careers in science.

The curriculum contains lecture materials and fun activities aimed at showing how raptors demonstrate important environmental and ecological relationships. The video takes students to the world famous Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota to witness behind the scenes rehabilitation of injured eagles, hawks, falcons, and owls. Students will observe diagnosis, treatment, physical therapy, and surgery—and finally, the release of these magnificent birds back into nature!
