Franklin FiresteelHello/Hau Koda
My name is Franklin Firesteel. My Dakota name is Isna Hoksina, which means "Lone Boy." I am a Sisitonwan Wahpetonwan Dakota from the Lake Traverse (Sisseton) reservation in northeast South Dakota.

I am 46 years old and have a son, Ohiyesa, who is four. I have been teaching at the University of Minnesota for 4 years in the American Indian Studies Department. I teach Dakota language, culture and history. Today there are only 17 fluent speakers of the Dakota language left in Minnesota and I am one of them. I also make beadwork, porcupine quillwork, traditional Dakota clothing and dance regalia. I sing and dance and am able to tell Dakota stories and legends.

I always remember the words of my grandfather who once told me "Akita mani wo" which means: "Remember everything as you walk." I would like to share some of what I've learned with you. I am very excited to be a part of Bell LIVE! and hope to speak with young people everywhere.
