The Academy Of Natural Sciences Of Drexel University is the oldest natural science museum and research institute situated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Academy Of Natural Sciences Of Drexel University was established in 1812 for “the encouragement and cultivation of the sciences and the advancement of useful learning.” The academy was set up to make the people of America aware of the usefulness of nature and how nature and human life are related to each other.

History

The academy was opened to the public in 1828 and started off with a very small collection of specimens and fossils. However, in 60 years, the museum grew its size thrice.

The present building if the academy was built in 1876 and was officially turned into a museum for the people to see.

The academy sent the new expeditions, and all the findings were researched and then showcased in the museum.

An environment research division was set up in the academy in 1948.

The Exhibits

There are over 17 million specimens in the Academy Of Natural Sciences Of Drexel University and museum. These specimens are not only there for exhibition but are also open to research and can be accessed by all the researchers and students.

The world’s first dinosaur mount was put up by the academy and was the skeleton of Hadrosaurus. At present, there is a huge dinosaur exhibit in the natural history museum.

There is also a child natural museum that has all the exhibits specially curate for the children to learn and explore.

Botany

The collecting mainly consists of everything that comes under plant species from microscopic bacteria to huge trees. Numerous herbariums are having some of the oldest plants from all over the world.

Vertebrate Paleontology

They have 22,000 species when it comes to the Paleontology collection in the museum.

Diatoms
The herbarium in the academy has over 220,000 slides of microscopic algae.
Entomology
The entomology collection currently has over 3.5 million specimens..
Others

There are many other collections such as invertebrate paleontology collection, mammalogy collection and much more.

Other Things To Know

There are various programs organized by the academy for the adults that offer a lecture and various workshops in different fields.

The programs for families and small children are also organized including safaris, sleepovers, workshops, scouts, family workshops and much more. The Wild Weekends are held on some weekends and is the best experience your children can have at the academy.

There are also field trips and the Women in Natural Science initiative organized by The Academy of Natural Science.

The Academy Of Natural Sciences Of Drexel University Museum opens every Monday To Friday from 10 am to 4.30 pm and on the weekends from 10 am to 5 pm.
